REVIEW: Zhena’s Gypsy Tea

Zhena’s gypsy tea recently won the Outstanding Packaging Award at Expo East, the eastern half of America’s largest natural and organic products show. Sure, the cans are great-looking, but the tea inside is equally noteworthy. First, this line of 30 tasty teas (the five we had were tasty, so we’ve given the rest the benefit of the doubt) is blended with fruit and flavor notes. Second, it hits a social responsibility trifecta of sorts—It’s organic, Fair Trade Certified and biodynamically-grown—and it’s kosher, too. (Read our article on the difference between organic and biodynamic farming.) Zhena donates a portion of the proceeds to C.E.O. Women, which helps low-income immigrant and refugee women succeed in entrepreneurship. In short, drinking these black, green, white and herbal teas will not only help you feel good, you’ll be doing some good too. Read the full review of Zhena’s Gypsy Tea.   Zhena’s Gypsy Tea

RECIPE: Winetails ~ Wine Cocktails

Canella Domani
Canella Domani is a spiced red wine cocktail

Wine beverages have been around as long as wine.

Early recipes that mixed wine with fruit juice and honey evolved over time to more elaborate concepts such as mulled wine—a “wine cocktail” that’s a combination of red wine, Port, brandy, triple sec, brown sugar and a sheaf of spices (allspice, bay leaf, cinnamon sticks and cloves_.

Today’s trendy term is winetail, a mixed drink made with wine instead of spirits. (There’s also the beertail.)

When making wine cocktails, use popularly-priced wines—not complex bottles that should be enjoyed for their layers of flavor. The wines of Ecco Domani—solid, everyday drinking wines with good fruit—are a fine choice.

The company teamed with mixologist Alex Ott to create a series of “winetails” that can be enjoyed before dinner, after dinner or any time you’re relaxing with a glass of wine and want a little something extra.

Make the Canella Domani (canella is the Italian word for cinnamon) when the weather gets cold—it’s best served warm and is a refreshing change from spiced cider, so often served during autumn.

Take a look at all of the Winetails cocktail recipes to make winetails.

While the Canella Domain is a warm winetail, the rest are cold, including:

  • A fall winetail with Chianti, apple cider, chai and fresh ginger root
  • A dessert winetail with Chianti, chocolate and raspberries

    ARTICLE: Rice Cooking Chart

Many of us have been there—we’ve cooked rice to what we think is the perfect timing, only to find it burned and stuck to the bottom of the pot. To sidestep future rice crises, check out our Rice Cooking Chart. While you’re there, scroll down the page for a delicious Basmati Rice Salad recipe.A cooking tip: Make sure that the lid fits tightly on the pot. Steam that escapes will use up the heat needed to cook the rice, and potentially cause burned rice as you try to get it to the desired tenderness after all the water has evaporated. Another tip: Buy yourself a rice cooker; or if you don’t have space for a pot dedicated to rice, get a multipurpose pot that is great for rice. Kohl’s has a new line of hard-anodized aluminum cookware, developed in partnership with The Food Network, that heats evenly to avoid overcooking and burning.   Kohl’s Cookware
A beautiful, effective and affordable new cookware from Kohl’s and the Food Network.
The pots and pans are lined with DuPont professional nonstick coating, which is metal-utensil safe and easy to clean. Tight-fitting tempered glass lids allow constant monitoring of the works-in-progress, without heat loss. Rice will never burn again! We’re clearing out our user-unfriendly pots and pans and getting a set of these. You can buy them online at Kohls.com (the 11 pieces shown in the photo are $299.99, but you can buy just the 1-quart Covered Saucepan, shown at the rear with the built-in strainer, for $39.99). While you’re there, take a look at all of the other nifty items in the new Food Network line. We want so many pieces, we needed a second page for our list.

TOP PICK OF THE WEEK: Superseedz

    SuperSeedz

If you like the idea of healthy pumpkin seeds but not the shells or the excessive saltiness, imagine gourmet pumpkin seeds.

Four years ago, Kathie Rosenschein began making SuperSeedz as a healthy snack for her family. Encouraged by all, she then started to sell them at craft fairs.

This year, she has a Gold Medal Winner from the Gallo Family Winery for her artisan food craftsman ship and is a NIBBLE Top Pick.

The delicious, all natural pumpkin seeds come in four flavors: Sea Salt, Original Curry, Somewhat Spicy and Cinnamon & Sugar.

They’re great to eat straight from the bag but we use them to accent foods ranging from eggs to salads to yogurt. They surely supercede (pun intended) any other roasted pumpkin seeds out there.
