RECIPE: Winetails ~ Wine Cocktails

Canella Domani
Canella Domani is a spiced red wine cocktail

Wine beverages have been around as long as wine.

Early recipes that mixed wine with fruit juice and honey evolved over time to more elaborate concepts such as mulled wine—a “wine cocktail” that’s a combination of red wine, Port, brandy, triple sec, brown sugar and a sheaf of spices (allspice, bay leaf, cinnamon sticks and cloves_.

Today’s trendy term is winetail, a mixed drink made with wine instead of spirits. (There’s also the beertail.)

When making wine cocktails, use popularly-priced wines—not complex bottles that should be enjoyed for their layers of flavor. The wines of Ecco Domani—solid, everyday drinking wines with good fruit—are a fine choice.

The company teamed with mixologist Alex Ott to create a series of “winetails” that can be enjoyed before dinner, after dinner or any time you’re relaxing with a glass of wine and want a little something extra.

Make the Canella Domani (canella is the Italian word for cinnamon) when the weather gets cold—it’s best served warm and is a refreshing change from spiced cider, so often served during autumn.

Take a look at all of the Winetails cocktail recipes to make winetails.

While the Canella Domain is a warm winetail, the rest are cold, including:

  • A fall winetail with Chianti, apple cider, chai and fresh ginger root
  • A dessert winetail with Chianti, chocolate and raspberries
