TODAY IN FOOD: It’s Blueberry Pancake Day

While we never turn down a plate of pancakes, this is another one of those holidays where we must question the wisdom: Why have Blueberry Pancake Day when blueberries are out of season? Who wants to make pancakes with highly expensive, not very sweet, fresh blueberries, or with tart frozen ones? The best solution, we think, is to sprinkle tasty dried blueberries onto your pancakes. Why schedule Blueberry Pancake Day when blueberries are out of season?

    I ironically came across great fresh blueberries on Blueberry Pancake Day. The blueberries were from a berry company in Chile and were truly better and more consistent than any I’ve ever had locally during the summer. Although I do not know how much they cost (these blueberries were purchased by my culinary school), this situation begs the question of whether even an incredible, out of season blueberry is worth the extra cost and environmental energy to import. Nonetheless, I agree that celebrating Blueberry Pancake Day at the end of January isn’t easy for all of us and would be better applied from, say, May to October–the blueberry growing season here!

    We love fresh blueberries: great flavor, low calories and high antioxidants. The wealthy among us can enjoy high-antioxidant blueberries year round; the rest of us will wait until the summer blueberry season. Off season, we’ve tried frozen blueberries and found them either very tart or very watery with no real blueberry flavor, alas. We paid $3.99 for a 4-ounce box of relatively tasty Chilean blueberries; but at $1.00 an ounce, we’d rather have salmon caviar (good omega 3 fish oils).
