REVIEW: Kool Freeze Kulfi Bars (Indian “Ice Cream”)

Kulfi Ice Cream
Kulfi is rich, creamy, and has less fat than ice cream.
Kulfi, an Indian frozen dessert similar to ice cream but made without air (overrun), is now available in cool and refreshing ice cream bars. Made in California by Kool Freeze for American palates, they’re richer, creamier and less grainy than traditional kulfi. They’re also made with cow’s milk instead of water buffalo’s milk; so if you haven’t enjoyed kulfi you’ve had before, there’s a good chance you may like these bars. In exotic flavors like Chikoo, Faluda, Malai and Saffron, plus the more familiar Coconut, Mango, Pistachio and Strawberry, Kool Freeze Kulfi Bars are an experience in satisfying your sweet tooth, with a flair that transcends the typical frozen dairy bar. The bars seem very rich, despite the fact that kulfi doesn’t have high butterfat content like premium ice cream—the bars are 160 to 180 calories apiece. They’re also all-natural and certified kosher. Read the full review in THE NIBBLE online magazine. For more information on the different types of frozen desserts, read our Ice Cream Glossary.

REVIEW: Wings Of Nature Bars

Wings Of Nature Energy BarsWe’ve tasted a lot of energy bars, but Wings Of Nature is the first line we’ve chosen to write about. Does that make it the best energy bar? Well, it sure tastes good, and it’s made of the right stuff. Gluten free, cholesterol free, trans fat free, non GMO, vegan, certified kosher and organic, the one thing these bars are full of is good taste. Four flavors have roasted coffee beans, four have dried fruits. Enjoy them for snacks and energy boosters, crumble them as dessert toppings and be creative. The only fly in the ointment is all but one of eight the bars have peanuts in the mix. While many people can have no nuts of any kind, enough people need to avoid peanuts in particular that Wings Of Nature might want to consider offering more peanut-free or nut-free varieties. REVIEW: Bombilla & Gourd Maté

Bombilla & Gourd
Blueberry yerba maté, our favorite flavor.
Bombilla & Gourd Yerba Maté is one of the new debutantes in the bottled maté category. It’s both USDA-certified organic and kosher. Maté (MAH-tay) is an infusion of the yerba maté leaf, grown in the South American rainforest. (It’s actually a variety of the holly bush). Maté is a superfood, one of the most nutritious beverages on earth—it has 24 vitamins, 15 amino acids and 90% more antioxidants than green tea. While it has more caffeine than energy drinks, its overall cocktail has calming properties that deliver jitter-free “calm energy.” Traditionally brewed in a dried gourd and drunk hot from a bombilla (metal straw), cold maté drinks are growing in popularity, and should become the hot new drink as more people realize the benefits it has over energy drinks and coffee. The Bombilla & Gourd line is available in five flavors: Blueberry, Lemon, Mint and Honey, Peach and Pomegranate. Our favorite is Blueberry, with Pomegranate in second place. Read the full review of Bombilla & Gourd, and check out our reviews of Guayakí Maté (bottled tea and tea bags) and Sol Maté, a sparkling cold drink that reminds us of a refreshing beer.

NEW ARTICLE: Ketchup Comparisons

What happens when you’re looking for the best ketchup in America? You taste 42 of them (including the Big Three), as Stephanie Zonis did, and find that five, boutique brands most people have never have heard of, really rock. The good news is that the sixth brand on our hit parade, Muir Glen, is organic, kosher, popularly-priced and available at many natural food stores and in organic departments at regular supermarkets nationwide. The other “winners” make great holiday gifts for ketchup lovers. Take A Fresh Look At Ketchup, which includes the history of ketchup to modern times. It includes such nuggets as, while the Reagan administration did not succeed in getting ketchup named a vegetable, the [first] Bush administration did.   Catsup A La Tomate
One our winners, from France, makes a nifty holiday gift for a ketchup lover.
